Miss Marple is invited in London to see his old friend Ruth. Miss Marple was a kind of companion travelling to Ruth and her sister, Carrie Louise. Ruth is worried about Carrie Louise. Stonygates is a huge manor and some of the buildings and from lands are used by the actual husband of Carrie Louise, Lewis, as a reformatory for the youthful criminals. Miss Marple meets people who live - the grand-daughter Gina de Carrie Louise and her discontented American husband Walter there; Stephen and Alex Restarick, the stepsons of Carrie Louise by his first marriage; Edgar Lawson, the rationally changeable overtired secretary of Lewis; and the daughter of Carrie Louise, Mildred, who is jealous of Gina. Soon, the stepson of Carrie Louise by his second marriage manifests himself. He is Christian Guldbrandsen and he aims the trust which contributes a fraction of funds used to aim Stonygates. He and Lewis speak behind closed doors. Later this night, Edgar begins agitating a gun around and reciting that Lewis is his father. Lewis takes it in his office where argument becomes even more heated. After some minutes, they hear two blows and then hysterical shouting. The door opens to reveal Lewis, unharmed. Edgar missed it. However, the body of Christian Guldbrandsen is discovered, pulled. Refreshed Miss Marple to find the murderer before it is too much late for his good friend Carrie Louise.

A recently married young woman, Gwenda Reed, turns England after living on most of his life in New Zelândia. Relay leader Gerry Burton is sent to a quiet land village to recover from the effects of an airplane misfortune and to be nursed back to the health by his nice sister Joanna. Because they are new to the community, they are shaken to receive an anonymous, sexually detailed poison ballpoint pen letter. They find later that other village nobility has been sacrificed by the same crank author, and the woman of the priest sends after her friend Miss Marple in hope for putting outside the culprit. If a woman of a lawyer apparently takes poison after the receipt of especially evil news, Miss Marple supposes that the letters are a camouflage for a little bit evil-announcing more.
