On the coast is from New Zealand, people Whangara think that their presence there dates one thousand years or more to a simple forefather, Paikea, who avoided death when his canoe makes capsize leaving in the coast behind a whale. From this instant, the leaders of Whangara, always the first born, always the male, were considered the direct descendants of Paikea. Pai, a 11-year-old girl in a tribe of patriarchal New Zealand, thinks that she is intended to be the new leader. But his grandfather Koro owes certainly by tradition to choose a male leader. Pai likes Koro more than somebody in the world, but her must struggle against him and one thousand traditional years to accomplish his destiny.
