His first step was finding a book of short stories by longtime fight manager Jerry Boyd, writing under the name F.X. Toole. When Hank Deerfield is said by the servicemen that his son Mike, who came back only recently from a military service in Iraq, AWOL he left travels on the military base to see if he can have a sense of the disappearance of the young man. The skein is a reprocessed military investigateur and reduced to nothingness both by the servicemen and by the lack of visible interest of of the civil police in case. At the end he really succeeds in accepting the assistant of Det. Emily Sanders and group they the piece together events which led to the disappearance of Mike. At the end, it is a history of how war dehumanise individuals in the point where the catch of life has no sense and has no purpose.

Quand Hank Deerfield est dit par les militaires que son fils Mike, qui est revenu seulement récemment d’un service militaire en Iraq, est parti AWOL il voyage à la base militaire pour voir s’il peut avoir un sens de la disparition du jeune homme. L’écheveau est un investigateur militaire retraité et est réduit à néant tant par les militaires que par le manque d’intérêt apparent de la de la police civile dans le cas. À la fin il réussit vraiment à recevoir l’aide de Det. Emily Sanders et ensemble ils le morceau ensemble les événements qui ont mené à la disparition de Mike. À la fin, c’est une histoire de comment la guerre déshumanise des individus au point où la prise de vie n’a aucun sens et n’a aucun but.
