A simple-minded gardener called the chance has spent his whole life in Washington D. C. House of an old man. If the man dies, chance on the street is issued without knowledge of the world except what he has learnt of the television. After a run in with a saloon he ends a guest of a woman (eve) and her husband Ben, a high-powered, but sicklyy enterpriser. Now called Chauncey Gardner, chance becomes a friend and confidant Ben, and an unlikely political insider.
Ein einfältiger Gärtner genannt die Chance hat sein ganzes Leben in Washington D ausgegeben. C. Haus eines alten Mannes. Wenn der Mann stirbt, wird Chance auf der Straße ohne Kenntnisse der Welt außer ausgestellt, was er vom Fernsehen gelernt hat. Nach einem Lauf in mit einer Limousine endet er ein Gast einer Frau (Vorabend) und ihr Mann Ben, ein einflussreicher, aber kränklicher Unternehmer. Jetzt genannt Chauncey Gardner, Chance wird Freund und Vertraute Ben, und einem unwahrscheinlichen politischen Eingeweihten.
