When a broken boy of heart loses the play of nativity of respected Madeira that ties it to his dead father, his bothered mother persuades a grumpy lonely woodcarver to create a substitution, and to allow when his son to look at work in him. The commission takes his relation to unexpected places like the young client do demands bigger and more difficult of the capacity of the woodcarver, and like the Christmas it is brought near, to three it struggles to combine one with other, his painful memories and the process of putting his unhappiness behind them.
