Most of the city throughout the world think Sheriff Calder is merely a puppet of the oil-rich man Val Rogers. When we learn that local baddie Bubba Reeves has escaped prison, Rogers son is concerned because he is having an affair with Reeves woman. It seems that many others in the city May feel they have reason to fear Reeves. Calder aims to Reeves alive, unharmed. Calder will oppose the power of Rogers, on the one hand, and violence, the other in his quest for justice.
