As a prisoner in Leavenworth prison, Robert Stroud has a number of confrontations with security guards and other prison. When Stroud kills a guard, he is condemned to be executed, but only his mother's impassioned intervention gets his sentence commuted to life imprisonment, which he must serve in solitary closure. Since serving his sentence of boredom and despair, one day he is helpless baby sparrow in the exercise yard.
