Charlie est intelligent, bizarre et sensible, mais toutes ses qualités parfaites sont malheureusement ombragées par son très grand nez ("m’Excusent, cela que votre nez ou un bus ont-ils garé sur votre visage ?"). L’ami de Charlie, Chris, d’autre part, est tout à fait attrayant, mais superficiel et malaisé avec les mots, surtout autour des femmes (il a une tendance de laisser tomber beaucoup). Subitement, le problème de Justin avec son pouce disparaîtra, en devenant un génie hyperactif, en gagnant plusieurs concours de discussion et l’admiration de son enseignant (Vince Vaughn). Quand même, les problèmes plus sérieux viendront pour Justin avec sa mère, son père et avec une dépendance de la drogue.
