An educated psychiatrist leaves an academic career to be employed at an institution where his father, a novelist, lived before writing a renowned book of children. Getting acclimatized to his position, he finds a schizophrenic who helps him to discover the secrets of the book and his place in the history.

Main character (John Travolta) notices a strange light on its birthday in a bar. Next days it becomes very clever and puts intelligence in good use in its community. When word arrives around it becomes known as a monster and each wants to find why it arrived at a motorized mechanic. The government also wants to lay the hand on it to put it in other uses.
