Thanks to the money brought in at work by one of Clark Griswold's inventions, a long life food preservative, Clark has enough money to take his wife Ellen, his son Rusty, and his daughter Audrey on a trip to Las Vegas -- the land of sand, slot machines, and the Hoover Dam. In Las Vegas, Clark crosses paths with Eddie, the sloppy husband of Ellen's cousin Catherine. Eddie and his family now live in the desert north of Las Vegas on what used to be an H-bomb test site. During the vacation in Las Vegas, Ellen becomes addicted to Wayne Newton, Rusty gets a fake ID and becomes a winning high roller, Audrey starts hanging out with Eddie's stripper daughter Vickie, and Clark becomes addicted to gambling and starts gambling away the family's bank account, which amounts to $22,600. Ellen's obsession with Wayne Newton is making Clark jealous, and Clark keeps losing money at the casino. After losing so much money, can Clark find a way to get the money back and save the family's vacation?

The Cleveland Indians have gone 34 years without a division title. Team owner Donald Phelps has died, and his snobby wife Rachel Phelps, a former showgirl, has taken over as the new owner. Some in the media think Rachel shouldn't be the owner of a baseball team. Rachel hates Cleveland, so she makes plans to move the Indians to the warmer climate of Miami, Florida, but she can't break the team's lease with Cleveland unless the team's attendance for the season is below 800,000. Rachel's plan is to put together a team so awful that the season attendance will be lower than 800,000. Rachel and general manager Charlie Donovan hire a manager for the Indians Lou Brown, who has been the manager of the minor league Toledo Mud Hens for the past 30 years. Charlie then recruits some misfit players catcher Jake Taylor, who is a major league standout with knee problems, Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, who is a pitcher who throws wildly, third baseman Roger Dorn, who is a product endorser and former major league star who will do anything to avoid injury, outfielder Willie Mays Hayes, who runs fast enough to steal a lot of bases but can't hit very well, and Pedro Cerrano, who is an outfielder who practices voodoo. As expected, the Indians get off to a slow start, but when they discover that Rachel wants the team to lose so she can move the team, the Indians get their act together and start winning games and raising their attendance, as Jake tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Lynn Wells, and the Indians do what they can to win the division title.

A line is drawn between the two officers and a number of men in the platoon when an illegal killing occurs during a village raid. As the war continues, Chris himself draws towards psychological meltdown. And as he struggles for survival, he soon realizes he is fighting two battles, the conflict with the enemy and the conflict between the men within his platoon.

The group finds that the island is inhabited and the local natives worship a huge gorilla called Kong. They abduct Dwan to offer her in a sacrifice to Kong. The crew hikes into the jungle trying to rescue Dwan. King Kong falls in love with Dwan and protects her against a huge serpent. When Fred finds that the oil in the island is not ready for exploitation, he decides to capture Kong and bring him to New York for exhibition. In the middle of a show, King Kong escapes, bringing panic to the locals.

As the drive goes on it takes on an epic scale, ultimately becoming what could well be called the central event in the lives of all involved.
